Where does Shungite come from?

Shungite is an ancient stone, believed to be almost 2 billion years old. Shungite was formed when there were no life forms on earth, deep within the earths crust. The main deposit of Shungite on earth comes from the Zazhoginskoye deposit near Lake Onega in the Shunga region of Karelia, North West of Russia.

Shungite stones can be divided into three types depending on the carbon content. Type III (regular shungite) and type II (Petrovsky shungite) contain 30-50% and 50-70% of carbon respectively. Type I shungite is called noble or elite shungite and it contains from 90 to 98 per cent of organic carbon. Elite shungite nuggets have shiny silvery surfaces and high energetic potential due to the amount of carbon. The deposits of elite shungite are extremely scarce and it amounts for less than one per cent of all shungite found. It is the purest and rarest type of shungite which is commenly used to purify water.
