Jasper is a fine-grained quartz with a host of foreign material. Brecciated jasper is also known as 'silex' and the colour arises from iron oxide. Traditionally jasper was one of the most popular stones for making seals and amulets because it is durable but easily carved. The Ancient Egyptians used this variety of jasper for their protective amulets, and the Native Americans call jasper the blood of the earth and consider it particularly sacred. Jasper is the stone of warriors. In Teutonic legend, the hilt of the magical sword of Siegfried, dragon slayer and ill-fated lover of the mystic Brunhild, was inlaid with red jasper to give him courage.

Spiritually jasper stimulates a war-like nature, and helps us to pursue and achieve goals with determination. Wear brecciated jasper for psychic defence and to keep you safe from harm.

Emotionally jasper imbues courage, readiness for conflict, aggression (in the sense of dealing with things forthrightly), willpower and endurance. Brecciated jasper keeps us cheerful and focused whatever the day may throw at us, and makes us more optimistic.

Mentally this grounding stone stimulates uprightness and honesty. It bestows courage to come to grips with even unpleasant tasks. Jasper stimulates the imagination and helps transform ideas into actions.

Physically brecciated jasper helps with menstrual and menopausal difficulties. It aids circulation and can warm cold limbs or aching joints and muscles. It increases energy and stamina and is good for anaemia or toxicity in the blood. All jaspers are helpful for anyone who has been in hospital or convalescing for a long period or who has been chronically depressed. Use brecciated jasper as a fertility crystal after a prolonged period of artificial contraception.

Pass your brecciated jasper through the flame of a red candle to revitalize its energies.
