Blue onyx is a chalcedony, consisting of fine inter-growths of silica minerals, formed hydrothermally in hollows in rocks. The name derives from the Greek word onux which means nail of a finger or claw. Legend tells us that whilst Aphrodite slept, Eros cut her fingernails and left the clippings scattered on the ground. Because no part of a heavenly body can die, the gods turned them into the bands of stone that became known as onyx. A stone associated with wizards and sorcerers, in the Middle East, blue onyx is believed to absorb sorrow.
