Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, forms the connecting link between the quartz families chalcedony and jasper. Chalcedony coloured green by iron silicate (related to moss agate) forms its basis, but as in jasper, small, grainy quartz crystals are found, also hematite and other iron oxides may be present, appearing as red and yellow spots. Heliotrope is Greek and means 'solstice', which is thought to refer to its powerful healing properties. The name bloodstone comes from the myth that, at the crucifixion, the blood of Christ fell on green jasper. In medieval texts this dual coloured gemstone is referred to as green jasper or blood jasper and recommended for healing infections, inflammations and poisoning.

Spiritually bloodstone helps you to protect yourself, by limiting and fending off undesirable influences. Use bloodstone in goddess rituals and for exploring past lives, especially in dreams. Bloodstone is an excellent charm for athletes and for anyone who wishes to win a competition, it attracts money. Make talking stones by casting five or six of these stones into a bowl of running water (use a tiny hose from a tap). Put the plug in the sink, close your eyes, ask your question and hear the answer in the water.

Emotionally bloodstone is calming in cases of irritability, aggressiveness and impatience and it revitalises in cases of exhaustion and tiredness. Useful against bullies, emotional as well as physical. It will support you if you are a single parent or are the only carer of an elderly relative.

Mentally bloodstone helps us adjust quickly to unexpected occurrences, so you keep control in any situation.

Physically bloodstone is the best immune-boosting mineral in cases of acute infections. It stimulates the flow of lymph fluid and the metabolic processes, reduces the formation of pus, detoxifies and neutralises over-acidification. It is especially recommended for the liver, kidneys, bone marrow and intestines. An excellent women's stone, bloodstone relieves menstrual and menopausal symptoms and helps women keep up their strength in labour.

Use running water or sunlight to recharge the energy of bloodstone.
