Blue lace agate is a variety of banded chalcedony, a mineral of the quartz family. It is usually banded in layers of predominantly light blue, striped with brighter blues, whites and even brown threads of colour. Blue lace agate is sometimes associated with the Virgin Mary and so is an icon of motherhood. In Scandinavia this calming, soothing stone is sacred to Nerthus, the earth mother. Considered to be amongst the most beautiful natural agates in the world, this fascinating stone was discovered on a farm known a Ysterputs Farm located in South West Africa by George Swanson. He called this stone the 'Gem of Ecology', because of the unique patterns of blue and white swirls.
